Bumpboxx X USA Bobsled

USA Bobsled Skeleton was really excited to work with us. This collaboration was part of giveaway contest to promote the sale of this unit. Because these Olympic hopefuls don't get major funding or sponsorship, these athletes rely of fundraising to support their passion. So this project was a big deal and a great way to shed some light on USA Bobsled Skeleton and the Bumpboxx brand.

USA Bobsled provided us with their style guide, brand assets and a rendering of the bobsled that they would be using this season. Our only perimeter was to make a design inspired by the look of their bobsled design, which was a patriotic American flag pattern incorporating red, white and blue on a black background.

The concept of the Bumpboxx design was to personify the experience of going down the track in a bobsled. Capturing that sense of speed and raw energy. We did a lot of research—watching tons of 1st person perspective videos of actual events just to get a sense of whats it's like moving that that rate of speed. The videos show the extreme forces that these athletes undergo and that bone jarring experience became the basis for the design.

I felt the best way to capture that energy was through collage. I printed the stars and stripes at different sizes so that I had the freedom to be as subtle or bold within each collage. Moving around the elements by hand was the best way to create the right amount of tension needed for the design without going overboard. There was a definite sense of satisfaction of being so tactile. There were no wrong answers. It was just what “felt” right.

The results came out great and the client was happy. Because USA Bobsled Skeleton was handling most of the promotion for the product we weren't required to do any heavy lifting of web or social content.
