Pittsburgh Steelers’ 80th Season Logo

The ask for this project was to create a logo commemorating the Steelers’ 80th season. The logo will be used in a variety of apparel applications and marketing materials, with the possibility of it being used as a patch on players’ jerseys. The patch should be celebratory, not overly complex, and needs to fit in with other patches that will be worn on the jerseys at the same time. It needed to look good as an embroidered patch on the jerseys, but should work flat and on other backgrounds as well, since the Steelers will use the mark for other applications, ie: screenprinted on apparel.

Process

Reference the slide show below for a peek into the logo design process.

The design included the following parameters:

  • MANDATORIES - Years “1933-2012” • Must include Steelers logo and/or logotype • Steelers colors: black, yellow and white

  • CONSIDERATIONS • Try “80th Season” vs. “80 Seasons” • Try versions w/ different color emphasis • Experiment with the holding shape

  • INSPIRATION • boiler plates • steel mills • Pittsburgh - “city of bridges” • geography of Pittsburgh

Thank You.
