Super Bowl LII Staff Outerwear
Super Bowl Staff outwear is a collection of garments and accessories made by the NFL specifically for staff working the event. For each calendar event like Super Bowl, Draft and Pro Bowl, the NFL outfits its staff in its own branded gear. Refined over the previous couple of years, staff input was taken into consideration when designing this line.
The ultimate goal of the outwear was to keep the employees warm and dry while visiting Minnesota for Super Bowl. Super Bowl in Minnesota gets really cold so we needed to design a system of outerwear that the staff could wear independently of each other or together in more extreme outdoor conditions. We looked at the Canada Goose jackets for inspiration when designing the men’s and women’s pieces. The unisex inner track jacket was designed to be understated. Mainly used for business meeting, the graphics are kept to a minimum. The graphics and trims that were added, were inspired by the iridescent glow of Minnesota’s own aurora borealis. Research shows that NFL staff working events prefer the branding and graphics to be subtle and unobtrusive. Charcoal Gray was decided on for the men’s parka and the women’s 3/4 coat was prescribed in white.
Collection Presentation
The final presentation below was the shown to internal clients and management. The goal was to present a clear, cohesive picture of all the pieces designed, highlighting the branding, graphic details, trims and materials. Special attention was given to the size and placement of all of the elements included on the outerwear. In the past NFL staff had mentioned that the branding and logos use were too overpowering. In turn, we kept the branding to a minimum and in areas where we could, we made it as subtle as possible so that NFL staff could get a longer usage out of each piece even after Super Bowl.
Design Process
Early in the decision making process, the inner garment was going to be a vest. Included are some of the different designs, patterning options, seam details and material choices.
